PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This case study consists in the installation of the Magallanes Turbine prototype in the European Marine Energy Centre (Scotland). This prototype incorporates a submerged part where the hydro generators are fitted. The platform is anchored to the sea bottom by two mooring lines, to the bow and stern.
This project is supported by the European Union by means of a Fast Track to Innovation Project and the Regional Government of Galicia. Forty researchers from universities and technological centers have taken part in developing the model.
REASON OF INTEREST
Magallanes Turbine is a project which has a quite moderate power generation and a very low cost as it does not require huge constructions as it is completely built onshore reducing construction costs. Moreover, its floating platform concept reduces the environmental impacts.
PROBLEMS & OBSTACLES
The main problem when it comes to offshore installation and submerged structure is the maintenances of it. Nevertheless, Magallanes Project has been able to reduce the maintenance costs designing a boat-like deck which enables a direct access to machinery through it.
Other problems that could arise are corrosion due to the saltwater and the possibility of shipping lanes obstruction.
SUCCESS FACTORS
As the goal of the project consists on maximizing the efficiency with respect to the obtainment of tidal energy, the major success factors are a simple and sturdy-built installation capable of producing electricity in any area requiring the lowest maintenance.
TRANSFERIBILITY IN MAESTRALE AREA
Tidal movement generates currents which according to the estimates of the International Energy Agency generates 7.5% of all the energy worldwide. Magallanes Project´s target is to install this technology in Gibraltar where it could contribute to increase that figure.
>>> MORE INFORMATION ABOUT MAESTRALE
Maestrale is an initiative co-founded by European funds which is focused on the creation and development of marine or blue energy. Their aim is to promote research and investment in order to expand this kind of energy in the Mediterranean area.
